How to Graft an apple tree

Posted by dasselhillsidefarm on March 23, 2018 at 9:50 AM Comments comments ()

This is how an apple tree is grafted. We buy the rootstocks from a nursery. We cut the bud wood from the apple variety that we want, like Ginger Gold. We cut a notch in the rootstock and the bud wood. We fit them together and tape them. We coat the top of the tree with wax to keep the tree from drying out. Then we keep them in the cooler until we can plant them in our nursery. The rootstock controls the size and hardiness of the tree. The rootstocks that we use for our trees are hardier than the ones on the trees that you can buy from the nursery. That is why we graft our own.

The trees are all pruned.  We have planted a couple hundred new apple trees.  We finished planting our new strawberries on May 10.  That is the latest we have ever planted.  The existing strawberries had their straw taken off about 10 days ago.  The tomatoes in the high tunnel are starting to bloom.  If anyone wants bare root strawberry plants.  Checkout our ad on craigslist.  25 per bundle of Mesabi or Jewell.

Karl and I are out pruning the apple trees when the weather cooperates.  We need to be finished before the spring comes.
